Sketching with charcoal is a lot of fun art. One of the first techniques taught to students who are attending art school is drawing with charcoal. Charcoal has a unique look and texture when applied to paper .there are many different types of pencils, chalks, and crayons used by artists when sketching charcoal often remains a favorite for many people, due to its versatile nature. Artists are often encouraged to begin drawing with charcoal as soon as start life drawing. This is because charcoal is ideal for making a variety of different lines very quickly. You can smudge charcoal with your fingers or some paper to shade it. Charcoal drawing is a well-recognized skill. It's like making abstract photos without using a computer. Charcoal is also a good way of learning gray gradients and lighting techniques .

It is quite soft and thus it will completely fill in the grooves of your paper, creating a very solid black. Vine charcoal is generally a bit silvery grey compared to the other types of charcoal and thus it doesn't make the darkest black. Vine charcoal is a popular drawing medium that is sold in long sticks. It’s made of charred pieces of grape vine and has a long, thin and slightly curving shape. Vine charcoal is a little bit harder than compressed charcoal. It’s perfect for creating very light, fine lines and shading throughout a drawing.

Pencil charcoal comes in a range from hard to soft, just like drawing pencils. Charcoal comes in a variety of different hardness ratings. The harder the charcoal you use, the lighter the line it will produce on the paper. Pencils are rated for hardness with a number and letter. H for hard and B for soft. 3H is often the hardest, and 3B the softest. HB is the center rating that is between the two extremes. In charcoal, HB is the hardest, while 6B is the softest. Keep in mind that softer charcoals will produce darker lines and be easier to smudge, but harder charcoals will make a cleaner, sharper edge.

Stick charcoal comes in a range of hard and soft and also sometimes different colors. It can create quite dark blacks and is generally used to make the darkest darks on your sketch.

While working with charcoal it can get your fingers dirty. For this reason many people choose to use a holder made of either plastic or metal for the charcoal.




There are numerous types of erasers that work well with charcoal, but the kneaded eraser is one of the best. It is very soft and can be molded and manipulated by kneading it like dough or clay. It can be used in two different ways, as a traditional eraser to remove a section of the charcoal and create a highlight, and as a smudging tool to blend some of the charcoal into lighter, finer areas.

After preparing all the necessary things needed for charcoal painting, let’s start to draw your sketch. Anything from people to fruits and vegetables can be drawn. When you begin to draw, sketch shapes lightly because by working lightly, you can erase easily if you have any mistake. Start drawing with a clean page. Gather up your charcoal, chamois and eraser, and start sketching. Use the side of your charcoal stick to draw your sketch. Continue fleshing out your subject using both the side of your charcoal and the point, especially along the edges to really make some dramatic lines. Take your chamois and wipe your entire drawing down. Using the chamois gives you a nice light grey background and enables you to later emphasize areas with a kneaded eraser. Then go in with a kneaded eraser and pull out some highlights. Knead your eraser to the shape you need and gently swipe it over your paper. You'll be amazed by how white those areas will become. You have darks and you have lights in your sketch. Focus on your drawing where the darkest darks and lightest lights are. Make sure you have a nice range of grays. A good way to preserve your sketches is to spray them with spray fixative or hairspray.
